It's Time to Get Serious About Cyber Bullying
The stories abound. Teenagers, no CHILDREN, committing suicide because they are horrifically bullied by text, Snap Chat, Facebook and Instagram. Instead of talking, we need to start DOING.
- Parents - Teach your children by example. If you are talking about people in your home, your children are listening, and they will model their behavior after yours. Hold your children accountable as well. Punish them for bullying behavior. Teach your kids that the "tattletale" mindset is a thing of the past. Yesterday's tattletales are today's heroes.
- Schools - Get serious about no tolerance. I know from experience that certain kids (top sports stars, children of teachers or police) get special treatment and extra chances. That is sending the absolute wrong message.
- Kids - SPEAK up and STAND up! If you see bullying, call it out! Then tell a teacher, nurse or administrator. Tell your parents so they can follow up as well!
- Social Media Platforms -Kids shouldn't be on social media until they are at least 16, period. Platforms need to find a way to verify ages. Platforms also need to be more proactive in policing hate speech and bullying and making sure that TOCs are followed.
- Police and Government - The government needs to create laws against bullying. Verbal assault is just as bad as physical assault. Police to make sure teens are being held accountable for their actions, no mater color, socioeconomic status, or age.
- Internet Service Providers - ISPs should be clear on where they stand on bullying. If social media platforms don't comply, drop them.
